    • Een boer uit Oostkamp

      Vanaf de tweede helft van de negentiende eeuw lieten veel boeren de stiel voor wat hij was wegens te hard werken voor te weinig geld. Nogal wat zetten de stap naar de brouwerijwereld. Ze kenden alvast de grondstoffen. Uit enkele documenten blijkt zelfs dat een aantal boeren hun landbouwerstaken in de rustiger wintermaanden combineerden met bier brouwen.

      Ook de familie Vanneste volgde dit traject. In Oostkamp woonde een zekere Franciscus Vanneste,

      landbouwer op de hoeve Lievestede. Hij was er ook Schepen tot aan z’n dood. Samen met z’n vrouw

      had hij acht kinderen; vijf jongens en drie meisjes. Slechts één van de jongens ging in de landbouw.

      Alle anderen gingen aan het brouwen. Desiré Vanneste vestigde zich op het Walplein: brouwerij Brugge Zeehaven, gelegen naast de huidige brouwerij De Halve Mane, waarmee het later samenging door het huwelijk van dochter Clémence Vanneste met Henri Maes II . Daar is de, zij het verre, verwantschap tussen beide brouwersfamilies ontstaan. Andere zoon August kocht brouwerij De Drie Monniken

      in de Molenmeers. Z’n jongere broer Jules kocht een zogenaamde landbouwstokerij in de buurt en de jongste zoon Philogène werd brouwer in Oostkamp.
